How Easy is this String Trimmer to Assemble

A new toy to play with as we say around our home. Ok, you have the box open and have checked out all the pieces, its time to get to work. First setup the charger and get the battery charging as it will take 12 to 16 hours to charge the battery for the first time.

NST2036 Auxiliary Handle

Next is attaching the guard and for this you will need the hex wrench from the hardware bag. Just follow the instructions for attaching the guard in the manual.

Same goes for the auxiliary handle. Just use your hex wrench and the pictures in the instruction manual.

The included instruction manual is far better than the usual piece of trash that masquerades is an owner’s manual for most homeowner type equipment.

This manual contains fairly clear instructions and good illustrations and best of all the lawyers and corporate bureaucrats have been restrained to just a few pages. On one of those pages they even tell you what size extension cord to use… Well they could be talking about the battery charge but on a 100-ft extension cord…

Now you get to play with the machine. Just keep adjusting the auxiliary handle , shaft length and strap until the machine feels comfortable. You will have plenty of time waiting for the battery to charge. When you do snap in the battery the balance and weight of the machine will change considerably.

NST2036 String Trimmer Ergonomics

.

Lets face it the NST2036 Cordless String Trimmer is not a lightweight machine.

If you have used commercial string trimmers switching to the NST2036 will be a breeze. If all your experience is with lightweight electric trimmers you will come to appreciate the adjustments available on this unit.

The adjustable auxiliary handle and telescoping shaft makes it easy to fit the machine to your body. Using the shoulder strap will help distribute the weight more evenly over your body.

36-Volt Battery & Charger

36V NiCd Battery Pack

The 36-volt NiCad battery moves this trimmer into the power range of gas trimmers. Yes the power of this unit is as good or better than the gas trimmers typically sold to the homeowner market.

For many of us that want to move away from gas trimmers and out range the reach of extension cords the 2036 is like a dream come true. Let me say it again; this unit delivers rip snorting, tear into it power that makes the 12 and 18 volt trimmers seem like kid’s toys.

As with most things there is a down side. The battery just can’t keep producing this level of performance for very long. Black & Decker gives this trimmer a 15 minute runtime before the battery needs recharging.

36V NiCd Dual Battery Charger

Reading through the customer reviews on Amazon and elsewhere will show you a wide variation in battery life. The low end of the scale is 10 minutes while the upper end is 20 to 25 minutes.

Almost all the difference in runtime is due to how the operator uses the trimmer.

The battery charger that comes with your NST2036 will hold 2 batteries. So you do have the option of buying a second battery to extend the operating time. A second battery will cost you about $100 at the time this review was written.

These are big NiCad batteries and need about 12 hours to recharge. Also the battery pack was designed to be recharged hundreds of times.

Variable Speed

Variable Speed Trigger

The variable speed operation of this string trimmer is not one of the features that most buyers pay attention to when purchasing. But having a cordless trimmer that operates like a gas trimmer with a variable speed trigger gives you far more control of the unit.

When working around various objects you can slow the trimmer speed down and do less damage if you slip and get to close. Also operating at a slower speed around hard objects will reduce string breakage and make it last longer.

The combination of the variable speed trigger and gear driven head make for smooth increases and decreases of speed and allow you to work at the speed that suits you.

Line Feed

This Black & Decker string trimmer uses the tried and true bump feed system.

Being the impatient type I have had to learn not to keep bumping the trimmer trying to get the line to extend quickly.

The right way is to bump the ground and wait a few seconds for the line to extend. Bumping the right way does make your spool of line last longer.

How Heavy is the NST2036 Cordless String Trimmer

11.9 pounds. This is twice as much as lightweight trimmers weigh and about 50% more than medium duty electric models.

If you have used the larger gas trimmers the weight of this trimmer will not be a consideration.

However many of you will find the weight of this unit a bit of a shock. Also the mounting of the battery part way down the shaft will make the unit balance differently than the usual gas trimmer.

The key to operating this trimmer and not letting it wear you out is the adjustable auxiliary handed and shaft as well as the shoulder strap discussed in the ergonomic section of this review.

String & Spools

Spool Wound with Dual Lines

This Black & Decker string trimmer uses dual heavy duty .080-inch line.

With this trimmer cutting a 14-inch swatch and spinning at 7500 RPM when at full throttle the heaver .080 line will last much longer than the lightweight .065 line supplied with most electric trimmers.

The power of this unit also allows the use of two cutting lines instead of the usual one found on cordless trimmers.

One complaint that occasionally surfaces in the reviews is that the spools are hard to rewind with new string.

The spools have two sections that each hold 16-feet of line and the line is wound in opposing directions.

The mechanically inclined among use will not give a thought to rewinding these spools. However if you have extra thumbs like I do rewinding these spools with new line or extending the line after breaking it off at the spool can be a bit of a chore.

Holding one line in place while working on the other does require some manual dexterity. Did I mention that tape is a good substitute for manual dexterity? Be sure and avoid tapes that leave a sticky residue behind.

NST2036 Goes Green

If you are concerned about the environment and want to live greener moving away from gas powered garden tools is a step in the right direction.

The NST2036 has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for its charging system. With the NST2036 you’ll save money on energy bills, and at the same time you can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner planet.

If your yard has always required the power and ruggedness of a gas string trimmer the NST2036 can free you of that noisy smelly machine. Just imagine the freedom that cordless convenience can bring, without the hassles of pull cords, spilled gas, tune-ups, or harmful emissions

Amazon Reviews

I just purchased this trimmer a week or so ago. At least at this point, I am completely satisfied. It is much more convenient than gas powered unit which never seem to start without a hassle after the first year thanks to E-10 gasoline. I have a small backyard orchard so corded units are also not practical. The B&D unit is a great fit for the job. The battery seems to power the unit for a reasonable length of time. I will purchase a second battery after I’ve used it for a longer length of time - pricey at $99 - to be sure that it’s going to hold up for the long haul.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a heavy duty string trimmer and want to avoid gas powered units the NST2036 should be on your short list.

There are two possible downsides to your owning this string trimmer.

1. The weight. This is a heavy trimmer. If you have any physical disabilities I would suggest you avoid this unit in favor of a lighter weight unit like the Worx GT.

2. The run time between recharges is short. Can you live with this limitation?

3. I don’t think there is a “three” this is an impressive string trimmer.

If the NST2036 sounds like the machine you are looking for but are just not sure and worried that you will be disappointed. Don’t be. Take advantage of Black & Decker’s 30 day risk free trial program. Buy the trimmer and use it, see if it does the job for you. If it doesn’t just return it to Amazon for a refund before the 30 trial is up.

Assembly

Assembly out of the box is simple and straight forward. Snap together the upper and lower sections of the shaft. Make sure you get the two sections tightly snapped together or you may have a problem with the string trimmer not running at full power.

Second snap on the guard.

Assembling the Toro 51467

All that is left is to charge the battery. The battery is fully charged when the charging light turns green. This can take as much as 24 hours.

Battery

The Toro 51467 is not on the leading edge of battery technology but takes a step back and uses the old tried and true lead acid battery.

While the lead acid battery adds weight to the string trimmer it also produces a longer run time than most other cordless string trimmers.

The small high density lead acid batteries used here are not as robust and forgiving as the battery in your car. Yes, these batteries can be abused and still last. But to get a long life here are a few facts and tips:

Lead acid batteries have no memory.

Always recharge the battery before storing. This is important!

The first charging is important – follow the directions.

The manual is a little confusing in discussing charging of the battery. First the battery can not be overcharged. So during the seasons you use the string trimmer just leave it plugged into the charger.

For winter storage charge the battery and unplug the charger from the wall and the string trimmer from the charger. Every couple of months during storage recharge the unit.

Taking care to store the trimmer fully charged and recharging it every couple of months while in storage can help in extending your battery’s life.

Line Feed

This Toro string trimmer uses a bump feed system to extend the cutting string as it wears down.

If you have used a string trimmer with a bump and feed system this one is no different. Do use a little patience and allow a few seconds for the line to finish extending before bumping the unit again. Doing so will get you the maximum use from each spool of line.

Machine Weight

Because of the large lead acid battery this string trimmer does weigh more than some other models. Toro redesigned the unit a few years ago and have done a decent job of balancing out the trimmer and making it easy to use.

If you have any physical limitations that cause you difficulty in using a string trimmer I would avoid this unit.

String & Spools

If you are like me, just buzzing along and wear the string down to the spool the result can be a bit disconcerting. What happens is as the line cools down it shrinks, retracting back into the spool. Now you have to open the spool, feed the line back trough the eyelet and reinstall the spool.

You can get new replacement spools wound with either 10-feet or 30-feet of line.

Or rewind the spools yourself and save money. Use 0.065-inch line that can be purchased in bulk. Be sure and keep an extra spool handy as the spools eventually wear out from bumping them on the ground.

A Recent Amazon Review

Great product! Does the job of its gas powered counterparts without the hassle of keeping a separate gas-oil mix (two-cycle) gasoline supply. Recharge time seems minimal, and there`s always plenty of power to get the job done. I`ve never owned a battery powered yard tool before, but it seems like my gas powered weed whackers have usually only been good for about one season. Yet to be seen how long this one lasts, but if it only lasts one season, I`d still buy another one to replace it. I have a feeling this one will last a little longer than that.

You can use this link to go to the Amazon reviews page for the Toro 51467 Cordless String Trimmer and read all the reviews.

Conclusion

There is nothing fancy about this machine. It uses old battery technology that adds a bit of weight, it is nosier than some other cordless models, has a small cutting diameter and I am sure you can find other comments about how ordinary this string trimmer is.

If you have a landscaped yard and need a string trimmer for light duty work the Toro 51467 cordless string trimmer is a great buy. For around $50 you are no longer tethered by that extension cord.

Black & Decker NTS2018 - Well Thought Out Ergonomics

The telescoping shaft adjusts to fit your height while the adjustable handle helps to fit the unit to your body. Combined with its light less than 7 pound weight the Grass Hog is a comfortable easy to use tool.

Batteries

The Brush Hog comes with two rechargeable batteries and the charger supplied with the unit recharges the battery in 8 hours.

The batteries are nickel-cadmium also called NiCad. Unfortunately NiCad batteries have some inherent problems. The biggest is they do not produce full power over their run cycle.

Usable run time on a battery is very difficult to find in the sales literature. Customer reviews for battery life are for the most part very good.

Customer Reviews

…I am quite happy with it. I have about 1/3 of an acre and one battery is plenty. In fact, if I rush, I can actually get two trimmings, a week apart, out of one charge…

Grass Hog Easy Start

…I have a small front lawn and this trimmer with 2 batteries is more than adequate for the job. One battery allow me to trim most of the lawn, the second one finish it off nicely…

http://www.mysears.com/Black-amp-Decker-18-Volt-12-in-Cordless-Grasshog-Trimmer-Edger-reviews

…bit worried about how long the battery would last, and for the most part, if you’re not always on the trigger you can pretty much do everything in one charge…

http://www.mysears.com/Black-amp-Decker-18-Volt-12-in-Cordless-Grasshog-Trimmer-Edger-reviews

…that it takes a while for the batteries to hold a charge that lasts longer than 10-15 minutes at a time, but after about four to five times of charging each battery, they seem to hold the charge longer and can last up to 30 minutes depending on the thickness of the weeds…

The NST2018 as an Edger

By simply pressing a button and rotating the head 180-degrees you can use the NST2018 as an edger.

Black & Decker’s Automatic Line Feed

The NTS2018 string trimmer uses Black & Decker’s Automatic Feed Spool System that automatically advances the cutting string to keep it at the proper length. No more tap and go, just go.

NST2018 String Trimmer as an Edger

As you can see from the review below the automatic line feed doesn’t always work properly. This is true of all the different string trimmers I know of. We are still early in the development cycle of automatic line feeders.

Customer Reviews

…Had a cst1000 before this and had trouble with the auto feed. Not with this. Though others dislike the times/amount it feeds I think it’s great…

A Recent Amazon Review

If you’re tired of ‘bumping’ the string, breathing in noxious fumes, and dealing with cans of gasoline and oil for the typical gas trimmer, then the cordless Black & Decker 12″ Grasshog is the way to go.

I bought two trimmers from Amazon. The first was the 9″ Grasshog, and the second was the 12″ Grasshog.

The 12″ Grasshog model is the definite winner. It is lighter, comes with 2 batteries that charge in 6 hours, and it cuts a larger swath through grass and tall weeds.

The key to making this trimmer even better is to buy a dual 18 volt charger. That way you can trim in the morning, wait for the batteries to recharge, and trim in the late afternoon or evening. I also bought 2 additional X-Treme batteries and a second dual charger to go even longer.

You can use this link to go to the Amazon reviews page for the Black & Decker NST2018 String Trimmer and read all the reviews.

As the image on the left shows Amazon has a huge number of reviews on the NST2018 and most are positive. Reading the negative reviews and give you a quick look into any problems. Just be sure and read a few positive reviews also as it is very easy to get a distorted impression if you don’t.

Conclusion

This is a light to medium duty unit intended for the homeowner with a landscaped yard.

While is unit does have some flaws it is still considered one of the best cordless string trimmers you can buy.

Ergonomics

The design and adjustments available on this string trimmer allow you to reach into difficult to get to spots as the image shows. The telescoping handle extends or retracts with a simple twist to match the height of every user.

The WORX GT is extremely flexible.

All of the adjustments on this tool are designed to be done by hand without any tools.

While the WORX GT is a light weight trimmer the adjustments available allow you to fit the trimmer to your body and work moments making it seen even lighter.

Over and over in the customer reviews I keep reading about those with back problems that think this string trimmer is wonderful because of its light weight and user friendly adjustments.

Batteries

The 18-volt lithium battery is much lighter in weight than the older generation nickel cadmium batteries and lasts much longer. The charger that comes with this model will recharge the battery in about 30 minutes.

WORX 18-volt Lithium Battery

The 18 volt system provides better power than the older lower voltage systems. While 36-volt units provide even more power they weigh considerably more.

Official information on how long the battery lasts before needing recharging is a bit scarce in the manufacture’s information. As you will see in the reviews below typical operating time on a battery charge is around 20 to 30 minutes.

If you spring for a second battery you can operate non-stop (or almost no-stop) until your body needs recharging.

…When it dies, It drops dead. There’s no gradual weakening. It runs till it quits. I’ve read since then that Lithium batteries are like that. There was no way I got 45 minutes…

Automatic Line Advance

The cutting line is automatically extended each time the trimmer is turned on.

WORX GT Adjustable Head

As you can see from the reviews the automatic line advance doesn’t always work. While there are just a few complaints in the many reviews I looked at, it is a reoccurring complaint. Is this mostly operator problem or a problem with some of the spools of line being incorrectly wound during the manufacturing process?

Customer Reviews

…the line is suppose to advance itself every time you turn it on. It never advances the full length to the cutter, it has to be pulled out by hand…
rateitall.com

…biggest disappointment is the automatic feed. It doesn’t. But . . . and this is something I discovered quite by accident. The mechanism that’s supposed to make it feed automatically can be depressed without removing the spool and You can pull out the line in half inch increments. It’s almost as good as automatic feed because I just turn it up and pull out the line as needed…
rateitall.com

…only negative I can think of is that the automatic string feed is good but not perfect…

A Recent Amazon Review

The Worx works really hard. Does a great job, is very light weight and easy to switch between Trimmer and Edger. 18 Volt Lithium battery doesn’t last as long as I thought it would, but at least it recharges fast.

In Closing

This unit is a lightweight to medium duty unit designed for the homeowner. Those of you with a landscaped yard will appreciate this trimmer.

For those of you that live in the country and have large jobs and big areas to keep free of weeds will want to find larger weed eater. However the WG151.5 would make a great second unit for those small jobs when you don’t want to dig out the monster.

The Worx GT WG151.5 should be at the top of your list if you have back problems or other physical disabilities that make yard work difficult.
